Why is there a charge to download version 2?

I originally wrote version 1 for my site to get rid of the spam and bots that started registering as soon as my site was indexed in Google.  I released it for everyone as I couldn't find a good alternative in the JED (at least, not one offering such comprehensive protection).  I did originally use Security Images, but didn't like the fact that every time Joomla was upgraded, it needed to be repatched (which never worked properly the first time, and usually took a few hours per upgrade for no apparent reason...).  I also dislike Captcha - it is inconvenient and irritating (from a user point of view).

Since it's first release, many additions and features were added - but mainly as bolt-ons without much planning.  Many of these features were by user request.

When I decided to implement logging, I also decided that the time had come to rewrite Registration Validator completely, to make further development and debugging much easier.  It also allowed me to split the antispam functions into their own class, which can now be used in other environments (i.e. outside Joomla) very easily.  I will be adding plugins for other environments as I get chance.

Due to the amount of time I have spent developing this software, and it's effectiveness, I have made access to Registration Validator 2 available only to subscribers.  The subscription fee is minimal, especially when you take into account the amount of time and energy you will save by not having to deal with unwanted registrations (and forum postings).

Of course, you can still use version 1 - it is freely available, and will remain so.  It won't be updated anymore however - at least, not by me.  This includes the internal list of disposable domains, which I do update once a month or so (as most disposable providers are regularly adding new domains to get around the fact they are blocked from many sites).

Is version 2 still GPL?

Yes.  Registration Validator will always be GPL.  GPL means free as in speech, not as in beer.

Why is there no internal blocklist in version 2?

There is, but it has been moved to a separate file to ease updating.  The internal blocklist can now be either enabled or disabled, but not edited (except by editing the defaultblocklist.php file manually).  The list only contains disposable email domains.

You can still add any extra domains you wish to block in the plugin parameters (details are in the Configuration guide).

Downloads are only available to registered users. Registration is free (though some content also requires a subscription). Register here

Some scripts are only available as a download.
