TOPIC: Windows 2008 - run as service

Windows 2008 - run as service 3 years ago #2

The information in this topic is now out-of-date. Please see here for details on how to install as a service for ALL OSs from Windows XP to Windows 7 (including 2003 and 2008).

I haven't tested POP Collector on Win2k8 myself, but have had reports of it running without a problem. The only issue so far comes if you want to run it as a service - as Win2k8 no longer supports srvany (from the Windows Resource Kit).

For anyone wanting to run POP Collector as a service on Win2k8, I have been given this information to achieve this:

- configure POP Collector and test the connection
- start windows task scheduler
- create task
- trigger: at startup
- Event: start mail utilities.exe
- Make sure "stop after 3 days is disabled"
- Make sure to check "start whether user is logged on or not"

Any more feedback with regards to POP Collector on Win2k8 would be welcomed, particularly whether it runs ok on the 64bit version (it should do in 32bit mode, but it would be good to have confirmation!).

I can confirm that it runs on Windows 2008 x64. I wrapped it in a PERLSVC script to run it as a service. I have attached the file (Assumes that POPCollector is in C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Collector\POPCollector.exe). To install it as a service, run popconnect.exe --install auto (or popconnect.exe --install to install it with manual start). Unfortunately, it launches both popconnect and popcollector, which causes double the RAM usage (~7MB on x64)...but that is a small price to pay...I can create a 32-bit version if someone needs it.

Attachment is too large to attach. Anyone interested in either version should post here and I will provide a link to get it.

I am not certain if the updates unto SP2 for Win Srv 2k8 have crushed something but when running as task the LDF file does not get created. Popcollector also keeps downloading certain messages over and over, so I had to switch back to keep logging the server on with an admin account and just lock the console.

The downloading messages over and over could be down to an issue that was fixed in a recent release. Are you running the latest version? There were issues with the date parsing on none-English systems for versions prior to the latest, which caused the problem during certain months.

Other than that, I unfortunately still do not have a Win2k8 server to test on.

Version 1.4.0 of POP Collector now has full support for Windows Vista and above (i.e. Windows 2008, Windows 7). It can automatically install as a service in the same way as was possible on Win2k3 (using the Windows Resource Kit tools).

I am just doing some final testing, and assuming that goes fine (there are no problems so far!) it will be released tomorrow.

Also updated are the data paths - POP Collector no longer uses it's Program Files folder for data.

Attached here is an alpha release. It is entirely possible that there will be no changes between this version and the full release, but anyone wanting an easy way to install and use POP Collector on Windows 2008 needs 1.4.0 or above.
