Hi, I just downloaded POP collector to see if I can use it with my Exchange server. I have gotten so far that it actually connects to my email account (on Godaddy.com) and shows me the emails and tells me that they pass validity check. Then the log says "checking for delete", and then there is a message that says:

SMTP failed: DATA - 553 Sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts.

I have gotten to this point by trial and error,a nd perhaps I just need a few pointers on how exactly to set this up. Here is what I want to do:

I have an account at godaddy.com, lets call it me@server1.com. I want to download all of the messages in that account, and drop them in my email box I have set up on my exchange server. The email I have on my exchange server is me@exserv1.test. Outlook seems to connect to the server, but I never see the emails coming through. Is there a more thorough explanation on how to set up Pop collector?

Thanks.

The problem is likely to be the account being set to global mailbox. As the domain on your Exchange server is different to the POP account, this won't work, and you'll need to specify the email address to forward all the messages to (which is done in the POP account settings).

Thanks. I am relatively new to this, so please forgive my ignorance. Let me ask a couple of questions to begin with:
1) I assume that POP collector collects the emails from the external server and then connects to Exchange Server and delivers them there through SMTP, right?
This makes sense, as I changed the SMTP server settings under the pop3 account details to the Exchange Server name and account credentials, and now POP collector does indeed deliver the emails to Exchange server, and the server then delivers them to Outlook. Great, so far.

2) Does POP collector get involved in the SENDING of emails in any way? The reason I am asking is that I can now receive emails, but I cannot send any (I am getting "cannot deliver emails" error messages). The reason I am asking this is that there seems to be two separate SMTP Server settings. One is listed under the pop account details, the other is listed under "items to configure". Can you explain the difference to me? Is the one under "items to configure the default SMTP server that POP Collector connects to, which can then be overridden by the settings in the pop account settings, or is one connected to incoming emails, the other to outgoing emails?

Assuming that POP collector does not get involved in the outgoing messages, where do I set the SMTP server to use for outgoing messages in Exchange Server?

Finally, I have a few questions about the settings in the pop account:

Under "other", what is a "Friendly Account Name", and what is the "default send from address"? This makes me thing that POP collector may indeed have to do something with sending emails.

Under "mail delivery" I have selected "all mail forwarded to this address", and provided the name of the mailbox. What is the purpose of the other option ("Global mailbox") and it's options. What is the "failsafe"?

The options for "SMTP server" under "items to configure" include "Default server", and there the address and a "HELO Domain". What is the "HELO Domain"?

1. Yes, POP Collector collects mail from a POP account, and then uses SMTP to send them on again.

2. No, POP Collector only sends messages it downloads - it has no other sending functionality as it is not an SMTP server itself, merely a bridge (or forwarder).

There are two different SMTP settings in POP Collector. The one with it's own menu item allows you to set default SMTP settings. Any POP account that doesn't have specific SMTP details entered will use these. This is useful if you are collecting from many accounts but only use one SMTP server.

Exchange server by default will use DNS to send messages, and connect to the destination SMTP server directly. This rarely works out of the box due to antispam measures now in common place. You would need to set Exchange to use a Smarthost - i.e. send all outgoing email to your ISP's mail-server for it to deliver. I am afraid this is not something I can easily explain here, but you will be able to find lots of information elsewhere if you search (e.g. search for Exchange Smarthost on Google).

Default send from address is the address used if POP Collector cannot determine who the sender was. This generally only happens with spam messages.

Friendly account name is simply a name that will be used to refer to the account in POP Collector (if it is entered, it is shown in the menu on the left).

Global mailbox allows you to have a catchall account for your domain with a webhost, and for POP Collector to then download this mail and forward it to the correct recipients within the organisation (it parses the recipients). In the event that no such recipients can be read from the message, it would be sent to the failsafe address.

HELO domain is simply what POP Collector uses to identify itself when starting an SMTP conversation. It generally has no bearing on anything, so can be safely ignored.

Thank you very, very much for all the help. However, now I seem to have a new problem. I was able to download the messages from the ISP, but for some reason I can't anymore.

When I collect the emails, I get the following log entries:

17/06/2010 16:43:11 POP: pop.secureserver.net - me@server1.com opening connection
17/06/2010 16:43:11 Total messages=13

17/06/2010 16:43:14 POP: pop.secureserver.net - me@server1.com closing connection

It appears that I do connect to the ISP, the email count is right, but then there is a problem with creating the message file, and the connection to the SMTP server via port 25.

Sorry for all the questions, but I don't seem to be able to find a stable solution.

Re:error 553 - not on list of allowed rcpthosts 1 year, 7 months ago #1323

The log shows that the message(s) are being downloaded correctly. You have enabled the archive option, but POP Collector cannot access the path you have specified (so check permissions on this path, especially if PC is running as a service).

PC also cannot send the message, as the connection is being refused by the SMTP server. This can only be an issue with the SMTP server, so the configuration needs to be checked there. Incidentally, if you use McAfee antivirus, it will block PC under default settings - other antivirus solutions may also do this if set to block SMTP traffic (which McAfee is by default).
