I am trying to upgrade to version 1.4.1 from version 1.2.7.
I uninstall the old version and successfully install the new one, but when I run "POPCollector.exe" from "Start Menu" or even from a program folder, application close without any error or Event Viewer info.

After I back to version 1.2.7 all works fine, but I want run it as a service.

My system is: Windows 2008 SBS x64
Application folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\POP Collector\
Microsoft POP3 Connector is disabled.

Please help.

Hi,
I've got the same problem on my windows 2008 SBS premium.
Pop collector never installed before but still, the result is the same
When you try to run the software, it close with no error no warning, nothing.
Has anyone found a solution ?

Thanks forwards

I'll test ASAP and post as soon as I have some information.

Re:Pop collector Upgrade to 1.4.1 1 year, 11 months ago #1056

I've tested on SBS 2k8 (64 bit) and can't replicate the issue. This was a new install.

When you run POP Collector on 2k8, it stores it's data in:
C:\ProgramData\POP Collector
(assuming c as the system drive)

Is this folder created on your systems? Is there a log file and/or a database in this folder if it exists?

Also, you should get security prompts on install and when you run POP Collector (it needs admin rights). Do you receive these prompts?

When I installed the pop collector, It didn't install and create the folder so I uninstalled it anr retried with admin rights. It created the folder, files and shortcut but When I try to launch the application, it ask for admin right, open and close the application in the blink of an eye.

Ok, if it opens and closes hopefully there should be a log, which may shed some light. Could you look in the ProgramData directory mentioned above to see if any files have been created there please?

In version 1.2.7 log file is in program directory.

In version 1.4.1 I check folder: "C:\ProgramData\POP Collector" and found file: POP Collector.log

Sample log file data as below:
02-03-2010 14:35:50 POP Collector 1.4.1 initialising
02-03-2010 14:35:50 Checking for POPCollector service
02-03-2010 14:36:57 POP Collector 1.4.1 initialising
02-03-2010 14:36:57 Checking for POPCollector service

Every times I try run the program in log file are written a pair of lines as above.

After changing permission of folder "C:\ProgramData\POP Collector" to Full access for my user, program stop showing window with "unauthorized program ...", but still don't run properly.

If it have any matter my Win SBS 2008 is a localized version (Polish).
I also have installed: MS SQL 2005, MS SQL 2008 and Exchange 2007 SP1 - all english, of course.

I don't have a programdata folder or I don't know where to find it...
When I go to program files x86\pop collector, I have no log folder or log file

I wonder if it is something to do with the OS locale. I have had problems with none-English systems with other products.

Do you both use none-English systems?

I will see if I can get hold of a trial or similar for a none-English version, as I do now have some spare 64bit hardware I can test on.

Re:Pop collector Upgrade to 1.4.1 1 year, 11 months ago #1062

I'm downloading the French trial of SBS 64 bit, so will see if I can replicate the problem on that (I can speak enough French to use the OS - I'd be stumped on Polish!!).

I am having the exact same problem. I'm on Windows Server 2008 R2 x64.

Re:Pop collector Upgrade to 1.4.1 1 year, 11 months ago #1095

Sorry I haven't more info on this yet. I did download the SBS trial, but then it turned out that my test box was underpowered (not enough RAM). I am downloading 2008R2 now, so will test on that - my test box will run that quite happily.

Yes SBS2008 is a massive download and requires 4GB of RAM before it will even install :\

Re:Pop collector Upgrade to 1.4.1 1 year, 11 months ago #1100

Sorry, still no news on this. The download of Win2k8 64bit has failed three times already (not sure why, download was corrupted though). I've given up on IE (you'd have thought that would work with Microsoft, wouldn't you?!) and am now downloading in Firefox (which should work).

I'll update as soon as I can!

Re:Pop collector Upgrade to 1.4.1 1 year, 11 months ago #1101

The clean install of Win2k8 exhibits the same problem. I have isolated it to a file incorrectly registering on this OS (tabctl32.ocx) - but I am not sure why it is not registering (it should be done during installation).

I will try building a new installer using InnoSetup (currently it uses the MS installer), and hope to have a resolution within a day or two.

Any updates on this?

Re:Pop collector Upgrade to 1.4.1 1 year, 10 months ago #1145

Unfortunately not... I am not sure what is going on at all. It seems due to a control not registering correctly - but on many Win2k8 systems it does register properly. I have yet been unable to find out why. I do still have the test system on which it doesn't work... It still doesn't work, and so far everything I have tried has failed.

Sorry it is taking a while - it seems we've entered the dark magic part of programming...

Re:Pop collector Upgrade to 1.4.1 1 year, 10 months ago #1191

I still have no idea what the problem is here. It works on some systems, and not others - lots of Googling and experimentation hasn't shed any light on the issue. I know it is something to do with file dependencies and UAC, but it isn't strictly to do with POP Collector but some strange Windows issue. Until I can determine exactly what the issue is, there is no way I can fix it.

The ocx I have mentioned registers fine during install, but doesn't work when POP Collector is run under the administrative account (which it needs to be). This is even stranger as that is the account it should be installed under in the first place.

Really sorry I haven't got anywhere with this. If anyone has any suggestions I am all ears - I am pretty much at a dead-end until new information comes to light.
